अन्ये च बहवः शूरा मदर्थे त्यक्तजीविताः
mat-arthe — for my sake
and many other heroes besides, ready to lay down their lives for me — all of them armed with many weapons, all skilled in war.

तानि सर्वाणि संयम्य युक्त आसीत मत्परः
mat-paraḥ — toward me (Shree Krishna)
Having brought them all under control, one should sit joined, intent on me. For the one whose senses are mastered, wisdom is firmly established.

If understanding is better than action, Krishna, why do you urge me into this terrible work?

Free of attachment, fear and anger, filled with me and taking refuge in me, many have been purified by the fire of knowledge and have reached my own state.

serene, fearless, holding to the vow of continence, mind restrained and turned on me — so one should sit, intent on me as the goal.

युञ्जन्नेवं सदाऽऽत्मानं योगी नियतमानसः
mat-sansthām — abides in me
Keeping the self constantly so joined, the practitioner with a disciplined mind reaches the peace that is the highest release, and dwells in me.

आत्मौपम्येन सर्वत्र समं पश्यति योऽर्जुन

One who sees everywhere as they see themselves, Arjuna — in joy or in sorrow alike — that one is held to be the highest practitioner.

तपस्विभ्योऽधिको योगी ज्ञानिभ्योऽपि मतोऽधिकः

The practitioner is greater than the ascetic, greater than the learned, and greater than those who perform rites. So become one who practises, Arjuna.

योगिनामपि सर्वेषां मद्गतेनान्तरात्मना

And of all who practise, the one who is turned inwardly to me with faith and worships me — that one I hold to be most joined of all.

मय्यासक्तमनाः पार्थ योगं युञ्जन्मदाश्रयः

With your mind attached to me, son of Pritha, practising yoga and taking refuge in me — hear how you will know me completely and without doubt.

But the fruit they gain has an end, for their understanding is small. Worshippers of the gods go to the gods; those devoted to me come to me.

These two paths, the bright and the dark, are held to be constant in this world. By one, a person does not return; by the other, they come back again.

By me, in my unmanifest form, all this world is pervaded. All beings rest in me; I do not rest in them.

न च मत्स्थानि भूतानि पश्य मे योगमैश्वरम्
mat-sthāni — abide in me
And yet beings do not rest in me. Look at my mastery: I sustain all beings, and I am not in them.

यथाऽऽकाशस्थितो नित्यं वायुः सर्वत्रगो महान्
mat-sthāni — rest in me
As the great wind, blowing everywhere, rests in space — so all beings rest in me. Understand it that way.

यान्ति देवव्रता देवान् पितृ़न्यान्ति पितृव्रताः

Those devoted to the gods go to the gods; to the ancestors, to the ancestors; to the spirits, to the spirits. Those who make their offering to me come to me.

मन्मना भव मद्भक्तो मद्याजी मां नमस्कुरु
mat-manāḥ — always think of me
Fix your mind on me, be devoted to me, make your offering to me, bow to me. So joined, with me as your goal, you will come to me.

मच्चित्ता मद्गतप्राणा बोधयन्तः परस्परम्
mat-chittāḥ — those with minds fixed on me
Their minds on me, their lives given to me, enlightening one another and always speaking of me, they are content and they rejoice.

मदनुग्रहाय परमं गुह्यमध्यात्मसंज्ञितम्
mat-anugrahāya — out of compassion to me
By your grace I have heard your highest word, the deepest secret, about the self — and by it my confusion is gone.

मत्कर्मकृन्मत्परमो मद्भक्तः सङ्गवर्जितः
mat-karma-kṛit — perform duties for my sake
One who does my work, takes me as the highest, is devoted to me and free of attachment, and without hatred toward any being — that one comes to me.

मय्यावेश्य मनो ये मां नित्ययुक्ता उपासते

Those who fix their minds on me and worship me, always steady, with the highest faith — I hold them to be the best joined.

ये तु सर्वाणि कर्माणि मयि संन्यस्य मत्पराः
mat-paraḥ — regarding me as the Supreme goal
But those who, giving all their actions over to me, take me as the highest and worship me with a mind turned nowhere else —

अभ्यासेऽप्यसमर्थोऽसि मत्कर्मपरमो भव
mat-karma paramaḥ — devotedly work for me
If you are unable even to practise, then make my work your highest aim. Doing what is to be done for my sake, you will reach perfection.

सन्तुष्टः सततं योगी यतात्मा दृढनिश्चयः
mat-bhaktaḥ — my devotees
content, self-governed, firm in resolve, always joined, with mind and understanding given to me — such a devoted one is dear to me.

अनपेक्षः शुचिर्दक्ष उदासीनो गतव्यथः
mat-bhaktaḥ — my devotee
Expecting nothing, clean, capable, untroubled, without distress, who has given up every undertaking that grasps — such a devoted one is dear to me.
- 12.20
ये तु धर्म्यामृतमिदं यथोक्तं पर्युपासते
mat-paramāḥ — intent on me as the supreme goal
And those who take up this nectar of what is right, as I have declared it, with faith and taking me as the highest — those devoted ones are very dear to me.

ज्ञेयं यत्तत्प्रवक्ष्यामि यज्ज्ञात्वाऽमृतमश्नुते
mat-param — subordinate to me
I will tell you what is to be known, by knowing which one reaches the deathless: the beginningless highest Brahman, which is said to be neither existent nor non-existent.

इति क्षेत्रं तथा ज्ञानं ज्ञेयं चोक्तं समासतः
mat-bhaktaḥ — my devotee
So the field, and knowledge, and what is to be known, have been told in brief. My devotee, understanding this, comes to my own state.

नान्यं गुणेभ्यः कर्तारं यदा द्रष्टानुपश्यति

When one who sees perceives no doer other than the strands, and knows what is beyond them, that one reaches my own state.

The divine nature leads toward release; the other binds. Do not grieve, son of Pandu: you are born to the divine.

But one who does the action that falls to them because it is to be done, having let go of attachment and of its fruit — that letting go is of clarity.

Having become Brahman, serene in self, one does not grieve and does not crave; the same toward all beings, such a person reaches the highest devotion to me.

सर्वकर्माण्यपि सदा कुर्वाणो मद्व्यपाश्रयः
mat-vyapāśhrayaḥ — take full refuge in me
Though always performing every kind of action, one who takes full refuge in me reaches by my grace the imperishable, unchanging state.

चेतसा सर्वकर्माणि मयि संन्यस्य मत्परः
mat-paraḥ — having me as the supreme goal
Give over every action to me in your thought, take me as the highest, hold to the yoga of understanding, and keep your mind always on me.
- 18.58
मच्चित्तः सर्वदुर्गाणि मत्प्रसादात्तरिष्यसि
mat-chittaḥ — by always remembering me
With your mind on me you will cross every difficulty by my grace. But if out of the sense of self you will not listen, you will be lost.

मन्मना भव मद्भक्तो मद्याजी मां नमस्कुरु
mat-manāḥ — thinking of me
Fix your mind on me, be devoted to me, make your offering to me, bow to me. I promise you truly, for you are dear to me: you will come to me.

य इमं परमं गुह्यं मद्भक्तेष्वभिधास्यति
mat-bhakteṣhu — amongst my devotees
But one who declares this deepest secret among those devoted to me does the highest act of devotion, and will surely come to me.
