1.9 Ready to lay down their lives Sanjaya speaks

अन्ये च बहवः शूरा मदर्थे त्यक्तजीविताः
नानाशस्त्रप्रहरणाः सर्वे युद्धविशारदाः

anye cha bahavaḥ śhūrā madarthe tyaktajīvitāḥ
nānā-śhastra-praharaṇāḥ sarve yuddha-viśhāradāḥ

and many other heroes besides, ready to lay down their lives for me — all of them armed with many weapons, all skilled in war.

Explanation

Ready to lay down their lives for me.

mad-arthe tyakta-jīvitāḥ. Duryodhana's summary of his own army is that they are prepared to die for him.

Nothing in the phrasing is about the cause. Set against 1.1's field of dharma, the war has a claimant on one side and a question on the other.
