  1. 2.48

    योगस्थः कुरु कर्माणि सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा धनञ्जय

    yoga-sthaḥ — being steadfast in yog

    Steady in yoga, do your work — letting go of attachment, even in success and failure alike. That evenness is what yoga means.

    बुद्धियुक्तो जहातीह उभे सुकृतदुष्कृते

    yogāya — for Yog

    One joined to understanding lets go of both good and bad deeds. So devote yourself to yoga. Yoga is skill in action.

    एवं परम्पराप्राप्तमिमं राजर्षयो विदुः

    yogaḥ — the science of Yog

    So it was received, handed from one to the next, and the royal sages knew it. But with the long passage of time, that yoga was lost in this world.

    स एवायं मया तेऽद्य योगः प्रोक्तः पुरातनः

    yogaḥ — the science of Yog

    This same ancient yoga I declare to you today, because you are devoted to me and my friend — and because it is the deepest of secrets.

    सांख्ययोगौ पृथग्बालाः प्रवदन्ति न पण्डिताः

    yogau — karm yog

    Children say that renunciation and yoga are different things; the learned do not. Whoever is truly established in one gains the fruit of both.

    नात्यश्नतस्तु योगोऽस्ति न चैकान्तमनश्नतः

    yogaḥ — Yog

    Yoga is not for one who eats too much, nor for one who does not eat at all; not for one who sleeps too much, nor for one who stays awake.

    युक्ताहारविहारस्य युक्तचेष्टस्य कर्मसु

    yogaḥ — Yog

    For one moderate in eating and rest, balanced in work, measured in sleep and waking — yoga becomes the slayer of sorrow.

    तं विद्याद् दुःखसंयोगवियोगं योगसंज्ञितम्

    yoga-saṁjñitam — is known as yog

    know that to be yoga: the parting from union with pain. It should be practised with resolve, and without discouragement.

    योऽयं योगस्त्वया प्रोक्तः साम्येन मधुसूदन

    yogaḥ — system of Yog

    This yoga of evenness you have described, Krishna — I do not see how it can hold, because the mind is unsteady.

    असंयतात्मना योगो दुष्प्राप इति मे मतिः

    yogaḥ — Yog

    For one whose mind is unbridled, yoga is hard to reach — this is my view. But for one who is self-governed and striving, it can be attained by the right means.

    अयतिः श्रद्धयोपेतो योगाच्चलितमानसः

    yogāt — from Yog

    One who has faith but is slack, whose mind wanders from yoga, and who fails to reach its perfection — where does such a person go, Krishna?

    एतां विभूतिं योगं च मम यो वेत्ति तत्त्वतः

    yogam — divine powers

    One who truly knows these glories and powers of mine is joined to me by unwavering practice. Of this there is no doubt.

    ये तु सर्वाणि कर्माणि मयि संन्यस्य मत्पराः

    yogena — with devotion

    But those who, giving all their actions over to me, take me as the highest and worship me with a mind turned nowhere else —

    Some see the self in the self by meditation; some by the way of reasoning; and some by the way of action.

    The steadiness by which one holds the movements of mind, breath and senses, unwavering through practice, is of clarity.
