  1. 1.17

    काश्यश्च परमेष्वासः शिखण्डी च महारथः

    parama-iṣhu-āsaḥ — the excellent archer

    The king of Kashi, that excellent archer, Shikhandi the great warrior, Dhrishtadyumna, Virata and Satyaki the unconquered;

    जितात्मनः प्रशान्तस्य परमात्मा समाहितः

    parama-ātmā — God

    For the self-mastered and peaceful, the highest self is steady — in cold and heat, pleasure and pain, honour and dishonour alike.

    अक्षरं ब्रह्म परमं स्वभावोऽध्यात्ममुच्यते

    paramam — the Supreme

    The imperishable is the highest Brahman. One's own nature is called the self. The bringing forth of beings and their states is called action.

    अव्यक्तोऽक्षर इत्युक्तस्तमाहुः परमां गतिम्

    That unmanifest and imperishable is called the highest destination. Having reached it, one does not return. It is my own abode.

    Hear again my highest word, mighty-armed one, which I speak to you because you are dear to me and for your good.

    By your grace I have heard your highest word, the deepest secret, about the self — and by it my confusion is gone.

    You have spoken of yourself as you are, supreme lord. Now I wish to see that form of yours as ruler.

    Having spoken thus, O king, the great lord of yoga then showed to Arjuna his highest form as ruler —

    त्वमक्षरं परमं वेदितव्यं त्वमस्य विश्वस्य परं निधानम्

    You are the imperishable, the highest to be known. You are the ultimate resting place of this world; you are the undying guardian of what is right; you are, I believe, the everlasting person.

    उपद्रष्टाऽनुमन्ता च भर्ता भोक्ता महेश्वरः

    parama-ātmā — Superme Soul

    The witness, the one who permits, the sustainer, the experiencer, the great lord — this is also called the highest self, the highest person, in this body.

    समं सर्वेषु भूतेषु तिष्ठन्तं परमेश्वरम्

    parama-īśhvaram — Supreme Soul

    One who sees the highest lord standing the same in all beings, undying among the dying, truly sees.

    अनादित्वान्निर्गुणत्वात्परमात्मायमव्ययः

    parama — the Supreme

    Being without beginning and without the strands, this highest self does not perish. Though seated in the body, Arjuna, it does not act and is not stained.

    न तद्भासयते सूर्यो न शशाङ्को न पावकः

    paramam — supreme

    The sun does not light it, nor the moon, nor fire. Having gone there, one does not return. That is my highest dwelling.

    उत्तमः पुरुषस्त्वन्यः परमात्मेत्युदाहृतः

    parama-ātmā — the Supreme Soul

    But there is another, the highest person, called the supreme self — who, entering the three worlds, upholds them, unchanging.

    सर्वगुह्यतमं भूयः श्रृणु मे परमं वचः

    Hear again my highest word, the deepest secret of all. You are dear to me, and so I will tell you what is for your good.

    य इमं परमं गुह्यं मद्भक्तेष्वभिधास्यति

    But one who declares this deepest secret among those devoted to me does the highest act of devotion, and will surely come to me.
