एवमुक्तो हृषीकेशो गुडाकेशेन भारत

Spoken to in this way by Arjuna, Krishna brought that magnificent chariot to a stand between the two armies,

तमुवाच हृषीकेशः प्रहसन्निव भारत

And Krishna, as if smiling, said this to him — grieving there between the two armies.

मात्रास्पर्शास्तु कौन्तेय शीतोष्णसुखदुःखदाः

Contact with the world brings cold and heat, pleasure and pain, son of Kunti. They come and they go; they do not last. Endure them.

अन्तवन्त इमे देहा नित्यस्योक्ताः शरीरिणः

These bodies have an end. The one who wears them is said to be eternal, indestructible, beyond measure. Therefore fight.

Beings are unmanifest before they appear, manifest in between, and unmanifest again when they go. Why grieve over this?

The one who dwells in the body of every being cannot be killed. So do not grieve for any creature.

सक्ताः कर्मण्यविद्वांसो यथा कुर्वन्ति भारत

As the unwise act while attached to their work, so let the wise act while unattached, wishing only the good of the world.

यदा यदा हि धर्मस्य ग्लानिर्भवति भारत

Whenever what is right declines and what is wrong rises up, then I bring myself forth.

तस्मादज्ञानसंभूतं हृत्स्थं ज्ञानासिनाऽऽत्मनः

So with the sword of knowledge cut away this doubt, born of ignorance and lodged in the heart, and take your stand in yoga, Arjuna. Stand up.

By the confusion of opposites, arising from wanting and not wanting, all beings are bewildered at birth.

Behold the sons of Aditi, the Vasus, the Rudras, the twin Ashvins and the winds. Behold many wonders never seen before.

Know me also as the knower of the field in every field, Arjuna. Knowledge of the field and of its knower — that I hold to be knowledge.

यथा प्रकाशयत्येकः कृत्स्नं लोकमिमं रविः

As one sun lights up this whole world, so the owner of the field lights up the whole field, Arjuna.

मम योनिर्महद्ब्रह्म तस्मिन् गर्भं दधाम्यहम्

My womb is the great nature; in it I place the seed, and from that comes the birth of all beings, Arjuna.

तमस्त्वज्ञानजं विद्धि मोहनं सर्वदेहिनाम्

Know inertia to be born of unknowing, the deluder of all the embodied. It binds by heedlessness, idleness and sleep.

सत्त्वं सुखे सञ्जयति रजः कर्मणि भारत

Clarity binds to happiness, restlessness to action, Arjuna. Inertia, covering over knowledge, binds to heedlessness.

रजस्तमश्चाभिभूय सत्त्वं भवति भारत

Clarity rises when restlessness and inertia are overcome; restlessness when clarity and inertia are; and inertia when clarity and restlessness are.

यो मामेवमसम्मूढो जानाति पुरुषोत्तमम्

One who, undeluded, knows me as the highest person knows everything, and worships me with their whole being, Arjuna.
- 15.20
इति गुह्यतमं शास्त्रमिदमुक्तं मयाऽनघ

So I have declared this deepest teaching, sinless one. Understanding it, a person becomes awake, and all that they had to do is done.

तेजः क्षमा धृतिः शौचमद्रोहो नातिमानिता

vigour, patience, steadfastness, cleanliness, bearing no malice, and no excessive pride — these belong to one born to the divine nature, Arjuna.

सत्त्वानुरूपा सर्वस्य श्रद्धा भवति भारत

Everyone's faith accords with their nature, Arjuna. A person is made of their faith: as their faith is, so are they.

तमेव शरणं गच्छ सर्वभावेन भारत
bhārata — Arjun, the son of Bharat
Take refuge in him with your whole being, Arjuna. By his grace you will come to the highest peace.
