    कविं पुराणमनुशासितार मणोरणीयांसमनुस्मरेद्यः

    rūpam — divine form

    One who remembers the ancient seer, the ruler, subtler than the subtlest, upholder of everything, unthinkable, radiant as the sun and beyond the dark —

    एवमेतद्यथात्थ त्वमात्मानं परमेश्वर

    You have spoken of yourself as you are, supreme lord. Now I wish to see that form of yours as ruler.

    द्यावापृथिव्योरिदमन्तरं हि व्याप्तं त्वयैकेन दिशश्च सर्वाः

    This space between heaven and earth, and all the directions, is filled by you alone. Seeing this wonderful and terrible form of yours, great being, the three worlds tremble.

    रूपं महत्ते बहुवक्त्रनेत्रं महाबाहो बहुबाहूरुपादम्

    Seeing your immense form, mighty-armed one, with many mouths and eyes, many arms, thighs and feet, many bellies and many terrible teeth, the worlds tremble, and so do I.

    अदृष्टपूर्वं हृषितोऽस्मि दृष्ट्वा भयेन च प्रव्यथितं मनो मे

    I am glad to have seen what was never seen before, and my mind is shaken with fear. Show me that other form of yours, lord of gods, refuge of the world; have mercy.

    मया प्रसन्नेन तवार्जुनेदं रूपं परं दर्शितमात्मयोगात्

    Out of grace toward you, Arjuna, I have shown you by my own power this highest form — radiant, universal, endless, primal — which no one before you has seen.

    मा ते व्यथा मा च विमूढभावो दृष्ट्वा रूपं घोरमीदृङ्ममेदम्

    rūpam — form

    Do not be troubled or bewildered at having seen this terrible form of mine. Free of fear and glad at heart, see again that other form.

    इत्यर्जुनं वासुदेवस्तथोक्त्वा स्वकं रूपं दर्शयामास भूयः

    Having said this to Arjuna, Krishna showed again his own form, and consoled the frightened one, taking on once more his gentle shape.

    दृष्ट्वेदं मानुषं रूपं तवसौम्यं जनार्दन

    Seeing this human form of yours again, so gentle, I am gathered back into myself, and I have returned to my own nature.

    सुदुर्दर्शमिदं रूपं दृष्टवानसि यन्मम

    The form you have seen is very hard to see. Even the gods long constantly to see it.

    Its form is not perceived here as it is — neither its end, nor its beginning, nor its middle. Having cut this deep-rooted fig with the strong axe of non-attachment,

    And recalling again and again that most wonderful form of Krishna, I am filled with amazement, and I rejoice again and again.
