मात्रास्पर्शास्तु कौन्तेय शीतोष्णसुखदुःखदाः

kaunteya — Arjun, the son of Kunti

Contact with the world brings cold and heat, pleasure and pain, son of Kunti. They come and they go; they do not last. Endure them.

हतो वा प्राप्स्यसि स्वर्गं जित्वा वा भोक्ष्यसे महीम्

kaunteya — Arjun, the son of Kunti

Killed, you gain the higher world; victorious, you enjoy the earth. So stand up, son of Kunti, and resolve to fight.

यततो ह्यपि कौन्तेय पुरुषस्य विपश्चितः

kaunteya — Arjun, the son of Kunti

Even for a person of discernment who is trying, son of Kunti, the restless senses carry the mind away by force.

यज्ञार्थात्कर्मणोऽन्यत्र लोकोऽयं कर्मबन्धनः

kaunteya — Arjun, the son of Kunti

Action other than that offered as sacrifice binds the world. So do your work as an offering, son of Kunti, free of attachment.

आवृतं ज्ञानमेतेन ज्ञानिनो नित्यवैरिणा

kaunteya — Arjun the son of Kunti

Knowledge is covered by this constant enemy of the wise, son of Kunti — desire, insatiable as fire.

ये हि संस्पर्शजा भोगा दुःखयोनय एव ते

kaunteya — Arjun, the son of Kunti

The pleasures born of contact are wombs of pain. They begin and they end, son of Kunti; the wise do not delight in them.

असंशयं महाबाहो मनो दुर्निग्रहं चलं

kaunteya — Arjun, the son of Kunti

No doubt the mind is hard to restrain and restless, mighty-armed one. But by practice and by dispassion it can be held, son of Kunti.

रसोऽहमप्सु कौन्तेय प्रभास्मि शशिसूर्ययोः

kaunteya — Arjun, the son of Kunti

I am the taste in water, son of Kunti; the light in moon and sun; the syllable Om in all the Vedas; sound in space; and the courage in a person.

यं यं वापि स्मरन्भावं त्यजत्यन्ते कलेवरम्

kaunteya — Arjun, the son of Kunti

Whatever state a person is holding when they let go of the body at the end — to that they go, son of Kunti.

आब्रह्मभुवनाल्लोकाः पुनरावर्तिनोऽर्जुन

kaunteya — Arjun, the son of Kunti

All worlds up to the world of Brahma return again, Arjuna. But having come to me, son of Kunti, there is no rebirth.

सर्वभूतानि कौन्तेय प्रकृतिं यान्ति मामिकाम्

kaunteya — Arjun, the son of Kunti

At the end of an age all beings merge into my nature, son of Kunti; and at the beginning of the next I send them forth again.

मयाऽध्यक्षेण प्रकृतिः सूयते सचराचरम्

kaunteya — Arjun, the son of Kunti

Under my oversight, nature brings forth all that moves and does not move. By this cause, son of Kunti, the world turns.

येऽप्यन्यदेवता भक्ता यजन्ते श्रद्धयाऽन्विताः

kaunteya — Arjun, the son of Kunti

Even those who devote themselves to other gods and worship them with faith worship me alone, son of Kunti, though not knowing it.

यत्करोषि यदश्नासि यज्जुहोषि ददासि यत्

kaunteya — Arjun, the son of Kunti

Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer, whatever you give, whatever austerity you practise — do it as an offering to me, son of Kunti.

क्षिप्रं भवति धर्मात्मा शश्वच्छान्तिं निगच्छति

kaunteya — Arjun, the son of Kunti

Such a person quickly becomes upright and reaches lasting peace. Be certain of this, son of Kunti: one devoted to me is never lost.

इदं शरीरं कौन्तेय क्षेत्रमित्यभिधीयते

This body, son of Kunti, is called the field; and one who knows it is called the knower of the field.

अनादित्वान्निर्गुणत्वात्परमात्मायमव्ययः

kaunteya — Arjun, the the son of Kunti

Being without beginning and without the strands, this highest self does not perish. Though seated in the body, Arjuna, it does not act and is not stained.

सर्वयोनिषु कौन्तेय मूर्तयः सम्भवन्ति याः

kaunteya — Arjun, the son of Kunti

Whatever forms arise in any womb, son of Kunti, the great nature is their womb, and I am the father who gives the seed.

रजो रागात्मकं विद्धि तृष्णासङ्गसमुद्भवम्

kaunteya — Arjun, the son of Kunti

Know restlessness to be of the nature of craving, arising from thirst and attachment. It binds the embodied one by attachment to action.

असुरीं योनिमापन्ना मूढा जन्मनि जन्मनि

kaunteya — Arjun, the son of Kunti

Falling into such wombs, the deluded do not reach me, birth after birth, Arjuna, and go down to the lowest state.

एतैर्विमुक्तः कौन्तेय तमोद्वारैस्त्रिभिर्नरः

kaunteya — Arjun, the son of Kunti

A person freed from these three gates of darkness, son of Kunti, does what is good for the self, and so goes to the highest.

सहजं कर्म कौन्तेय सदोषमपि न त्यजेत्

kaunteya — Arjun, the son of Kunti

The work that comes with your own nature should not be abandoned even if it is flawed, son of Kunti. Every undertaking is wrapped in fault, as fire is wrapped in smoke.

सिद्धिं प्राप्तो यथा ब्रह्म तथाप्नोति निबोध मे

kaunteya — Arjun, the son of Kunti

Hear from me briefly how one who has reached that perfection attains Brahman.

स्वभावजेन कौन्तेय निबद्धः स्वेन कर्मणा

kaunteya — Arjun, the son of Kunti

Bound by your own nature and by the work born of it, son of Kunti, you will do the very thing you do not wish to do, unwillingly.
