8.6 You go where you already are Krishna speaks
यं यं वापि स्मरन्भावं त्यजत्यन्ते कलेवरम्
तं तमेवैति कौन्तेय सदा तद्भावभावितः
yaṁ yaṁ vāpi smaran bhāvaṁ tyajatyante kalevaram
taṁ tam evaiti kaunteya sadā tad-bhāva-bhāvitaḥ
Whatever state a person is holding when they let go of the body at the end — to that they go, son of Kunti.
Explanation
Death delivers you to the bhāva — the state, the disposition — you were already in.
Read on its own, 8.5 sounds like a deathbed examination — one chance, at the end, to think of the right thing. This verse removes that reading. What happens is not a judgement and not an accounting. It is a continuation.
Which changes the timescale of the whole instruction. If the last hour carries whatever was already being held, then nothing about it is decided in the last hour.

The verse is usually read as being about dying, and it is. But note what it makes death: not a judgement, not an accounting, but a continuation of whatever was already being held. Which turns the whole of life into the practice for it — as the next verse says outright.
