प्रकृतिं पुरुषं चैव क्षेत्रं क्षेत्रज्ञमेव च
kṣhetram — the field of activities
Nature and the person, the field and the knower of the field, knowledge and what is to be known — these I wish to understand, Krishna.

इदं शरीरं कौन्तेय क्षेत्रमित्यभिधीयते
kṣhetram — the field of activities
This body, son of Kunti, is called the field; and one who knows it is called the knower of the field.

क्षेत्रज्ञं चापि मां विद्धि सर्वक्षेत्रेषु भारत
kṣhetra-jñam — the knower of the field
Know me also as the knower of the field in every field, Arjuna. Knowledge of the field and of its knower — that I hold to be knowledge.

तत्क्षेत्रं यच्च यादृक् च यद्विकारि यतश्च यत्

What that field is, what its nature is, how it changes, and from what it comes; and who the knower is and what his power — hear this from me in brief.

इच्छा द्वेषः सुखं दुःखं सङ्घातश्चेतनाधृतिः

desire, aversion, pleasure, pain, the body as an aggregate, awareness, and steadiness — this, in brief, is the field with its changes.

इति क्षेत्रं तथा ज्ञानं ज्ञेयं चोक्तं समासतः

So the field, and knowledge, and what is to be known, have been told in brief. My devotee, understanding this, comes to my own state.

यावत्सञ्जायते किञ्चित्सत्त्वं स्थावरजङ्गमम्

Whatever comes into being, moving or unmoving, know it to arise from the joining of the field and the knower of the field.

यथा प्रकाशयत्येकः कृत्स्नं लोकमिमं रविः

As one sun lights up this whole world, so the owner of the field lights up the whole field, Arjuna.

क्षेत्रक्षेत्रज्ञयोरेवमन्तरं ज्ञानचक्षुषा

Those who see with the eye of knowledge the difference between the field and its knower, and the freeing of beings from nature, reach the highest.
