  1. 10.5

    अहिंसा समता तुष्टिस्तपो दानं यशोऽयशः

    dānam — charity

    harmlessness, evenness, contentment, austerity, giving, honour and dishonour — the states of beings arise from me alone, in all their variety.

    अभयं सत्त्वसंशुद्धिः ज्ञानयोगव्यवस्थितिः

    dānam — charity

    Fearlessness, purity of being, steadiness in knowledge and practice, giving, restraint, offering, study, austerity, straightness;

    आहारस्त्वपि सर्वस्य त्रिविधो भवति प्रियः

    Even the food each person likes is of three kinds — and so are offering, austerity and giving. Hear how they differ.

    दातव्यमिति यद्दानं दीयतेऽनुपकारिणे

    A gift given because it should be given, to one who cannot return it, in the right place and at the right time and to a worthy person, is held to be of clarity.

    यत्तु प्रत्युपकारार्थं फलमुद्दिश्य वा पुनः

    dānam — charity

    But a gift given expecting something in return, or looking to its fruit, or grudgingly, is held to be of restlessness.

    अदेशकाले यद्दानमपात्रेभ्यश्च दीयते

    dānam — charity

    A gift given at the wrong place and time, to unworthy people, without regard and with contempt, is said to be of inertia.

    तस्मादोमित्युदाहृत्य यज्ञदानतपःक्रियाः

    dāna — charity

    So those who speak of Brahman always begin the acts of offering, giving and austerity with the utterance of Om, as the scriptures direct.

    तदित्यनभिसन्धाय फलं यज्ञतपःक्रियाः

    dāna — charity

    With Tat, and without desiring the fruit, the various acts of offering, austerity and giving are performed by those who seek release.

    त्याज्यं दोषवदित्येके कर्म प्राहुर्मनीषिणः

    dāna — charity

    Some learned people say action should be given up as a fault; others, that offering, giving and austerity should not be given up.

    यज्ञदानतपःकर्म न त्याज्यं कार्यमेव तत्

    dāna — charity

    The acts of offering, giving and austerity should not be given up; they should be done. To give them up is a mistake.

  11. 18.43

    शौर्यं तेजो धृतिर्दाक्ष्यं युद्धे चाप्यपलायनम्

    dānam — large-heartedness

    Valour, vigour, steadfastness, skill, not fleeing in battle, generosity and leadership are the work born of the nature of the warrior.
