17.7 Even the food Krishna speaks
आहारस्त्वपि सर्वस्य त्रिविधो भवति प्रियः
यज्ञस्तपस्तथा दानं तेषां भेदमिमं श्रृणु
āhāras tv api sarvasya tri-vidho bhavati priyaḥ
yajñas tapas tathā dānaṁ teṣhāṁ bhedam imaṁ śhṛiṇu
Even the food each person likes is of three kinds — and so are offering, austerity and giving. Hear how they differ.
Explanation
Even the food.
āhāraḥ — what is taken in. The threefold scheme is about to be applied to diet, offering, austerity and giving, and food comes first.
A scripture willing to get this specific is unusual, and the specificity is the point: the chapter is arguing that the strands are legible in the most ordinary choices, not only in religious ones.
