And there Arjuna saw them standing — fathers, grandfathers, teachers, uncles, brothers, sons, grandsons, companions, fathers-in-law and friends, in both armies.

देहिनोऽस्मिन्यथा देहे कौमारं यौवनं जरा

As a person passes from childhood to youth to age, so the embodied one passes from body to body. The steady are not confused by this.

अव्यक्तादीनि भूतानि व्यक्तमध्यानि भारत

Beings are unmanifest before they appear, manifest in between, and unmanifest again when they go. Why grieve over this?

Fire, light, day, the bright fortnight, the six months of the sun's northern course: departing then, those who know Brahman go to Brahman.

Smoke, night, the dark fortnight, the six months of the southern course: departing then, one reaches the light of the moon and returns.
