योगस्थः कुरु कर्माणि सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा धनञ्जय

Steady in yoga, do your work — letting go of attachment, even in success and failure alike. That evenness is what yoga means.

दूरेण ह्यवरं कर्म बुद्धियोगाद्धनञ्जय

Action for the sake of its fruit is far inferior, Arjuna, to action guided by understanding. Take refuge in understanding. Those who work only for the fruit are wretched.

योगसंन्यस्तकर्माणं ज्ञानसंछिन्नसंशयम्

dhanañjaya — Arjun, the conqueror of wealth

One who has given up action through practice, whose doubts are cut away by knowledge, who is established in the self — actions do not bind that person.

मत्तः परतरं नान्यत्किञ्चिदस्ति धनञ्जय

dhanañjaya — Arjun, conqueror of wealth

There is nothing higher than me, Arjuna. All this is strung on me like pearls on a thread.

न च मां तानि कर्माणि निबध्नन्ति धनञ्जय

dhanañjaya — Arjun, conqueror of wealth

And these actions do not bind me, Arjuna. I am seated as though indifferent, unattached to them.

अथ चित्तं समाधातुं न शक्नोषि मयि स्थिरम्

dhanañjaya — Arjun, the conqueror of wealth

If you cannot hold your thought steadily on me, then seek to reach me by the practice of returning, Arjuna.

बुद्धेर्भेदं धृतेश्चैव गुणतस्त्रिविधं श्रृणु

Hear now the threefold division of understanding and of steadiness, according to the strands, described one by one.

कच्चिदेतच्छ्रुतं पार्थ त्वयैकाग्रेण चेतसा
