A painting for betrayed

Betrayed

By someone who was supposed to be on your side.

  1. The book opens here. Arjuna's crisis is not fear of battle — it is that the people opposite him are his own. If that is where you are, so is the entire text.

    कृपया परयाऽऽविष्टो विषीदन्निदमब्रवीत्
    दृष्ट्वेमं स्वजनं कृष्ण युयुत्सुं समुपस्थितम्

    Seeing my own people standing here, Krishna, wanting to fight — my limbs give way, and my mouth goes dry.

  2. Contact with the world brings heat and cold, pleasure and pain; they come and they go. The instruction is titikṣhā — endure, not deny. It does not ask you to pretend it did not hurt.

    मात्रास्पर्शास्तु कौन्तेय शीतोष्णसुखदुःखदाः
    आगमापायिनोऽनित्यास्तांस्तितिक्षस्व भारत

    Contact with the world brings cold and heat, pleasure and pain, son of Kunti. They come and they go; they do not last. Endure them.

  3. An unnervingly complete list: well-wisher, friend, enemy, the indifferent, the hateful, the related. Sameness toward all of them is named as the highest state — and as difficult, which is why it is described as an achievement.

    सुहृन्मित्रार्युदासीनमध्यस्थद्वेष्यबन्धुषु
    साधुष्वपि च पापेषु समबुद्धिर्विशिष्यते

    One who regards alike a well-wisher, a friend, an enemy, a stranger, a mediator, someone hateful, a relative, the good and the bad — that one stands out.

  4. Equal in honour and dishonour, equal to friend and foe. Not because the difference does not exist, but because letting it govern you hands them the controls.

    समः शत्रौ च मित्रे च तथा मानापमानयोः
    शीतोष्णसुखदुःखेषु समः सङ्गविवर्जितः

    The same to enemy and friend, the same in honour and dishonour, in cold and heat, in pleasure and pain, free of attachment;
