    कुलक्षये प्रणश्यन्ति कुलधर्माः सनातनाः

    sanātanāḥ — eternal

    When a family is destroyed, its ancient traditions perish; and when tradition is lost, disorder overtakes the whole family.

    अच्छेद्योऽयमदाह्योऽयमक्लेद्योऽशोष्य एव च

    sanātanaḥ — primordial

    It cannot be cut, cannot be burnt, cannot be wetted, cannot be dried. It is everlasting, everywhere, unmoving, unchanging, always.

    परस्तस्मात्तु भावोऽन्योऽव्यक्तोऽव्यक्तात्सनातनः

    sanātanaḥ — eternal

    But beyond that unmanifest is another, higher, eternal and unmanifest, which does not perish when all beings perish.

    त्वमक्षरं परमं वेदितव्यं त्वमस्य विश्वस्य परं निधानम्

    sanātanaḥ — everlasting

    You are the imperishable, the highest to be known. You are the ultimate resting place of this world; you are the undying guardian of what is right; you are, I believe, the everlasting person.

    A fragment of my own self, eternal, becomes the living being in the world of the living, and draws to itself the six senses, the mind among them.
