    काम एष क्रोध एष रजोगुणसमुद्भवः

    rajaḥ-guṇa — the mode of passion

    It is desire, it is anger, born of the strand of restlessness — all-devouring, deeply harmful. Know this as the enemy here.

    सत्त्वं रजस्तम इति गुणाः प्रकृतिसंभवाः

    rajaḥ — mode of passion

    Clarity, restlessness and inertia — these strands, born of nature, bind the imperishable embodied one to the body.

    रजो रागात्मकं विद्धि तृष्णासङ्गसमुद्भवम्

    Know restlessness to be of the nature of craving, arising from thirst and attachment. It binds the embodied one by attachment to action.

    सत्त्वं सुखे सञ्जयति रजः कर्मणि भारत

    Clarity binds to happiness, restlessness to action, Arjuna. Inertia, covering over knowledge, binds to heedlessness.

    रजस्तमश्चाभिभूय सत्त्वं भवति भारत

    rajaḥ — mode of passion

    Clarity rises when restlessness and inertia are overcome; restlessness when clarity and inertia are; and inertia when clarity and restlessness are.

    ये शास्त्रविधिमुत्सृज्य यजन्ते श्रद्धयाऽन्विताः

    Those who worship with faith but set aside what the scriptures direct — where do they stand, Krishna? In clarity, restlessness or inertia?
