  1. 1.36

    निहत्य धार्तराष्ट्रान्नः का प्रीतिः स्याज्जनार्दन

    pāpam — vices

    What pleasure would there be for us in destroying Dhritarashtra's sons? Only guilt would come to us from killing them.

    अहो बत महत्पापं कर्तुं व्यवसिता वयम्

    pāpam — sins

    Alas — we have resolved to commit a great wrong, ready to kill our own people out of greed for a kingdom and its comforts.

    अथ चैत्त्वमिमं धर्म्यं संग्रामं न करिष्यसि

    pāpam — sin

    But if you will not fight this rightful battle, you abandon your own duty and your good name, and you take on the wrong instead.

    सुखदुःखे समे कृत्वा लाभालाभौ जयाजयौ

    Treating pleasure and pain alike, gain and loss, victory and defeat — then engage in the fight, and you take on no wrong.

    Then what drives a person to do wrong, Krishna, even against their own will, as though compelled by force?

    अपि चेदसि पापेभ्यः सर्वेभ्यः पापकृत्तमः

    pāpebhyaḥ — sinners

    Even if you were the very worst of all who do wrong, you would cross the whole of it on the boat of knowledge.

    नादत्ते कस्यचित्पापं न चैव सुकृतं विभुः

    pāpam — sin

    The all-pervading takes on no one's wrongdoing and no one's good deeds. Knowledge is covered by ignorance, and by that people are deluded.

    येषां त्वन्तगतं पापं जनानां पुण्यकर्मणाम्

    pāpam — sins

    But those whose wrongdoing has come to an end, whose actions are good, freed from the confusion of opposites, worship me with resolve.
