kula-dharmāḥ

यद्यप्येते न पश्यन्ति लोभोपहतचेतसः

kula-kṣhaya-kṛitam — in annihilating their relatives

Even if they cannot see it, their minds overpowered by greed — the wrong in destroying a family, the offence in betraying friends —

कथं न ज्ञेयमस्माभिः पापादस्मान्निवर्तितुम्

kula-kṣhaya — killing the kindered

how should we, who can see it, not turn away from this wrong?

कुलक्षये प्रणश्यन्ति कुलधर्माः सनातनाः

kula-kṣhaye — in the destruction of a dynasty

When a family is destroyed, its ancient traditions perish; and when tradition is lost, disorder overtakes the whole family.

अधर्माभिभवात्कृष्ण प्रदुष्यन्ति कुलस्त्रियः

kula-striyaḥ — women of the family

Where disorder prevails, Krishna, the women of the family are corrupted; and when the women are corrupted, confusion of lineage follows.

सङ्करो नरकायैव कुलघ्नानां कुलस्य च

kula-ghnānām — for those who destroy the family

That confusion brings ruin on the family and on those who destroyed it, for their ancestors fall, deprived of the offerings of food and water.

दोषैरेतैः कुलघ्नानां वर्णसङ्करकारकैः

kula-ghnānām — of those who destroy the family

By these wrongs of those who destroy a family — by the confusion of lineage they cause — the enduring duties of community and household are undone.

उत्सन्नकुलधर्माणां मनुष्याणां जनार्दन

kula-dharmāṇām — whose family traditions

And for those whose family traditions have been destroyed, Krishna, we have heard from the wise that dwelling in hell is unending.
