  1. 1.10

    अपर्याप्तं तदस्माकं बलं भीष्माभिरक्षितम्

    balam — strength

    Our strength is beyond counting, with Bhishma guarding it; theirs is limited, with Bhima at its head.

  2. 6.34

    चञ्चलं हि मनः कृष्ण प्रमाथि बलवद्दृढम्

    bala-vat — strong

    The mind is restless, Krishna, turbulent, strong and stubborn. Holding it seems to me as hard as holding the wind.

  3. 7.11

    बलं बलवतां चाहं कामरागविवर्जितम्

    balam — strength

    I am the strength of the strong, free of desire and craving. I am the desire in beings that does not go against what is right.

    असौ मया हतः शत्रुर्हनिष्ये चापरानपि

    bala-vān — powerful

    That enemy I have killed, and I shall kill the others too. I am the lord, I am the enjoyer, I am successful, strong and happy.

    अहङ्कारं बलं दर्पं कामं क्रोधं च संश्रिताः

    balam — strength

    Clinging to the sense of self, to force, arrogance, desire and anger, these envious people despise me, present in their own bodies and in others'.

    अशास्त्रविहितं घोरं तप्यन्ते ये तपो जनाः

    bala — force

    Those who practise severe austerity not enjoined by the scriptures, out of pretence and self-regard, driven by desire and attachment and force,

    आयुःसत्त्वबलारोग्यसुखप्रीतिविवर्धनाः

    bala — strength

    Foods that increase life, clarity, strength, health, ease and satisfaction — juicy, rich, nourishing and pleasing — are dear to those of clarity.

    अहङ्कारं बलं दर्पं कामं क्रोधं परिग्रहम्

    balam — violence

    free of the sense of self, of force, arrogance, desire, anger and possession, without claiming anything as “mine”, at peace — such a person is fit for the state of Brahman.
