16.14 That enemy I have killed Krishna speaks

असौ मया हतः शत्रुर्हनिष्ये चापरानपि
ईश्वरोऽहमहं भोगी सिद्धोऽहं बलवान्सुखी

asau mayā hataḥ śhatrur haniṣhye chāparān api
īśhvaro ’ham ahaṁ bhogī siddho ’haṁ balavān sukhī

That enemy I have killed, and I shall kill the others too. I am the lord, I am the enjoyer, I am successful, strong and happy.

Explanation

Placed in this book, on this battlefield, the line is not general. Arjuna is being made to hear the voice of someone who is doing exactly what he is about to do, and doing it as a boast.

Nothing separates the two acts except the disposition behind them — which is the distinction the whole book rests on, stated here by contrast rather than argument.
