ātmā

अज्ञश्चाश्रद्दधानश्च संशयात्मा विनश्यति

ātmā — a person

The ignorant, the faithless and the doubting are lost. For one who doubts there is no happiness here or anywhere.

उद्धरेदात्मनाऽऽत्मानं नात्मानमवसादयेत्

ātmanā — through the mind

Lift yourself by yourself; do not let yourself sink. For the self alone is the self's friend, and the self alone is the self's enemy.

बन्धुरात्माऽऽत्मनस्तस्य येनात्मैवात्मना जितः

ātmā — the mind

The self is a friend to the one who has mastered it; but for one who has not, the self remains hostile, like an enemy.

प्रशान्तात्मा विगतभीर्ब्रह्मचारिव्रते स्थितः

ātmā — mind

serene, fearless, holding to the vow of continence, mind restrained and turned on me — so one should sit, intent on me as the goal.

न च मत्स्थानि भूतानि पश्य मे योगमैश्वरम्

ātmā — self

And yet beings do not rest in me. Look at my mastery: I sustain all beings, and I am not in them.

अहमात्मा गुडाकेश सर्वभूताशयस्थितः

ātmā — soul

I am the self seated in the heart of all beings. I am the beginning, the middle and the end of beings.

अनादित्वान्निर्गुणत्वात्परमात्मायमव्ययः

ātmā — soul

Being without beginning and without the strands, this highest self does not perish. Though seated in the body, Arjuna, it does not act and is not stained.

यथा सर्वगतं सौक्ष्म्यादाकाशं नोपलिप्यते

ātmā — the soul

As space, being everywhere, is not tainted by its subtlety, so the self seated everywhere in the body is not tainted.
