  1. 2.16

    नासतो विद्यते भावो नाभावो विद्यते सतः

    sataḥ — of the eternal

    What is not, never comes to be; what is, never ceases to be. Those who see the truth have seen the end of both.

    तपाम्यहमहं वर्षं निगृह्णाम्युत्सृजामि च

    sat — eternal spirit

    I give heat; I withhold the rain and I send it. I am deathlessness and I am death; I am what is, and what is not, Arjuna.

    कस्माच्च ते न नमेरन्महात्मन् गरीयसे ब्रह्मणोऽप्यादिकर्त्रे

    sat-asat — manifest and non-manifest

    And why should they not bow to you, great one, greater than Brahma, the first maker? Endless lord, god of gods, refuge of the world — you are the imperishable, what is and what is not, and what is beyond both.

    ज्ञेयं यत्तत्प्रवक्ष्यामि यज्ज्ञात्वाऽमृतमश्नुते

    sat — existent

    I will tell you what is to be known, by knowing which one reaches the deathless: the beginningless highest Brahman, which is said to be neither existent nor non-existent.

    पुरुषः प्रकृतिस्थो हि भुङ्क्ते प्रकृतिजान्गुणान्

    sat-asat-yoni — in superior and inferior wombs

    The person, seated in nature, experiences the strands born of nature. Attachment to those strands is the cause of birth in good wombs and bad.

    सत्कारमानपूजार्थं तपो दम्भेन चैव यत्

    sat-kāra — respect

    Austerity performed for the sake of respect, honour and reverence, and with show, is said here to be of restlessness — unsteady and impermanent.

  7. 17.26

    सद्भावे साधुभावे च सदित्येतत्प्रयुज्यते

    sat-bhāve — with the intention of eternal existence and goodness

    Sat is used to mean what truly is and what is good. And the word Sat is used, Arjuna, for an act of praise.

  8. 17.27

    यज्ञे तपसि दाने च स्थितिः सदिति चोच्यते

    sat — the syllable Sat

    Steadiness in offering, in austerity and in giving is also called Sat; and any action for the sake of that is called Sat.
