deham

देहिनोऽस्मिन्यथा देहे कौमारं यौवनं जरा

dehinaḥ — of the embodied

As a person passes from childhood to youth to age, so the embodied one passes from body to body. The steady are not confused by this.

जन्म कर्म च मे दिव्यमेवं यो वेत्ति तत्त्वतः

deham — the body

One who truly knows my birth and my work as they are, on leaving the body is not born again, but comes to me.

अधिभूतं क्षरो भावः पुरुषश्चाधिदैवतम्

dehe — in the body

The ground of matter is perishable nature; the ground of the gods is the cosmic person; and I am the lord of offerings, here in this body, best of the embodied.

ओमित्येकाक्षरं ब्रह्म व्याहरन्मामनुस्मरन्

deham — the body

uttering the single syllable Om — Brahman — and remembering me, one who departs on leaving the body goes to the highest.

क्लेशोऽधिकतरस्तेषामव्यक्तासक्तचेतसाम्

deha-vadbhiḥ — for the embodied

The trouble is greater for those whose minds are set on the unmanifest, for the unmanifest is hard to reach.

यदा सत्त्वे प्रवृद्धे तु प्रलयं याति देहभृत्

deha-bhṛit — the embodied

When one who bears a body meets its end while clarity prevails, that one goes to the spotless worlds of those who know.

गुणानेतानतीत्य त्रीन्देही देहसमुद्भवान्

dehī — the embodied

Having gone beyond these three strands, out of which the body arises, the embodied one is freed from birth, death, old age and pain, and reaches the deathless.

अहं वैश्वानरो भूत्वा प्राणिनां देहमाश्रितः

deham — the body

Becoming the fire of digestion in the bodies of the living, I take in the fourfold food with the outgoing and incoming breath.

न हि देहभृता शक्यं त्यक्तुं कर्माण्यशेषतः

deha-bhṛitā — for the embodied being

It is not possible for one who bears a body to give up action entirely. But one who lets go of the fruit of action is called a renouncer.
