7.9 The fragrance of the earth Krishna speaks
पुण्यो गन्धः पृथिव्यां च तेजश्चास्मि विभावसौ
जीवनं सर्वभूतेषु तपश्चास्मि तपस्विषु
puṇyo gandhaḥ pṛithivyāṁ cha tejaśh chāsmi vibhāvasau
jīvanaṁ sarva-bhūteṣhu tapaśh chāsmi tapasviṣhu
I am the clean fragrance of the earth and the brightness in fire; the life in all that lives, and the austerity of those who practise it.
Explanation
The list continues into smell and fire.
The clean fragrance of the earth, the brightness in fire, the life in all that lives — and the austerity of those who practise it.
The last item breaks the pattern again, as courage did. Having named physical qualities, the verse claims a discipline the same way — as if effort were another property of the world rather than an achievement of the person.
