6.3 Action, then stillness Krishna speaks

आरुरुक्षोर्मुनेर्योगं कर्म कारणमुच्यते
योगारूढस्य तस्यैव शमः कारणमुच्यते

ārurukṣhor muner yogaṁ karma kāraṇam uchyate
yogārūḍhasya tasyaiva śhamaḥ kāraṇam uchyate

For the sage climbing toward yoga, action is said to be the means. For one already established in it, stillness is.

Explanation

Two stages, and a different means for each.

For the one climbing, action. For the one already established, stillness.

The Gita has spent four chapters insisting on action, and here it concedes that eventually there is somewhere else to be. Not as a preference — as a stage, arrived at by the work.
