5.6 Renunciation needs the other one Krishna speaks

संन्यासस्तु महाबाहो दुःखमाप्तुमयोगतः
योगयुक्तो मुनिर्ब्रह्म नचिरेणाधिगच्छति

sannyāsas tu mahā-bāho duḥkham āptum ayogataḥ
yoga-yukto munir brahma na chireṇādhigachchhati

But renunciation is hard to reach without yoga, mighty-armed one. The sage joined to yoga comes to Brahman before long.

Explanation

And now the asymmetry.

Renunciation without yoga is hard to reach; the sage joined to yoga arrives before long. So the two roads are equal in destination and unequal in how walkable they are.

That is the same distinction chapter 12 draws between the formless and the personal, and the same reason given. The Gita ranks by difficulty when it declines to rank by truth.
