2.71 Without mine and without I Krishna speaks
विहाय कामान्यः सर्वान्पुमांश्चरति निःस्पृहः
निर्ममो निरहंकारः स शांतिमधिगच्छति
vihāya kāmān yaḥ sarvān pumānśh charati niḥspṛihaḥ
nirmamo nirahankāraḥ sa śhāntim adhigachchhati
The one who has given up all desires and lives without longing, without “mine” and without “I” — that one comes to peace.
Explanation
Without mine and without I.
nirmamo nirahaṅkāraḥ — the two words that will recur through chapters 12, 13 and 18.
Giving up desires is the first clause and the smaller one. What the verse actually asks for is the dissolution of ownership and of the owner, which is the condition every later portrait assumes.
