17.6 They torment me, dwelling in them Krishna speaks
कर्षयन्तः शरीरस्थं भूतग्राममचेतसः
मां चैवान्तःशरीरस्थं तान्विद्ध्यासुरनिश्चयान्
karṣhayantaḥ śharīra-sthaṁ bhūta-grāmam achetasaḥ
māṁ chaivāntaḥ śharīra-sthaṁ tān viddhy āsura-niśhchayān
tormenting the elements of the body, senseless — know their resolve to be of the other nature. They torment me, who dwell within them.
Explanation
They torment me, dwelling within them.
The turn is sudden. Those who torment the elements of their own body are said to be tormenting him — because of 15.7, a fragment of his own self is what is in there.
Which makes self-punishment a species of the contempt 16.18 described, and puts it in the same category the next verses put harming other people.
