11.5 Behold, by thousands Krishna speaks
पश्य मे पार्थ रूपाणि शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः
नानाविधानि दिव्यानि नानावर्णाकृतीनि च
paśhya me pārtha rūpāṇi śhataśho ’tha sahasraśhaḥ
nānā-vidhāni divyāni nānā-varṇākṛitīni cha
Behold my forms, son of Pritha, by hundreds and by thousands — of many kinds, divine, of many colours and shapes.
Explanation
Behold — by hundreds and by thousands.
Many kinds, divine, of many colours and shapes. The answer begins immediately, without warning or preparation.
And the grammar is plural from the first word. Whatever is about to be shown, it is not one thing, which is the difficulty Arjuna will have describing it.
