1.19 It tore at their hearts Sanjaya speaks

स घोषो धार्तराष्ट्राणां हृदयानि व्यदारयत्
नभश्च पृथिवीं चैव तुमुलो व्यनुनादयन्

sa ghoṣho dhārtarāṣhṭrāṇāṁ hṛidayāni vyadārayat
nabhaśhcha pṛithivīṁ chaiva tumulo nunādayan

That uproar tore at the hearts of Dhritarashtra's sons, and the tumult resounded through earth and sky.

Explanation

The noise tore at their hearts.

hṛdayāni vyadārayat — split their hearts open. And the tumult resounded through earth and sky.

The first casualty in the Gita is a morale, and it belongs to Duryodhana's side. Arjuna's collapse eight verses later is not the only failure of nerve on this field, only the honest one.
