yajñair iṣhṭvā svar-gatiṁ prārthayante
te puṇyam āsādya surendra-lokam
aśhnanti divyān divi deva-bhogān
Knowers of the three Vedas, drinkers of soma, purified of fault, worshipping me by offerings, ask for the way to heaven — and reaching the world of the gods, they enjoy its pleasures.
Explanation
The correct worshippers, described precisely.
Knowers of the three Vedas, drinkers of soma, purified of fault, worshipping by offerings — and asking for the way to heaven.
Nothing in the description is a criticism. Every credential is real. The single problem is in what they asked for, and the next verse names its consequence.
