9.18 Goal, witness, refuge, friend Krishna speaks
गतिर्भर्ता प्रभुः साक्षी निवासः शरणं सुहृत्
प्रभवः प्रलयः स्थानं निधानं बीजमव्ययम्
gatir bhartā prabhuḥ sākṣhī nivāsaḥ śharaṇaṁ suhṛit
prabhavaḥ pralayaḥ sthānaṁ nidhānaṁ bījam avyayam
I am the goal, the upholder, the lord, the witness, the dwelling, the refuge, the friend; the origin, the dissolution, the ground, the resting place, and the imperishable seed.
Explanation
Twelve names, and one of them is friend.
Goal, upholder, lord, witness, dwelling, refuge, suhṛt, origin, dissolution, ground, resting place, imperishable seed.
Friend sits in the middle of a list of cosmic functions, exactly as it does at the end of chapter 5. The Gita keeps putting the domestic word among the enormous ones.
