योगी युञ्जीत सततमात्मानं रहसि स्थितः
एकाकी यतचित्तात्मा निराशीरपरिग्रहः
yogī yuñjīta satatam ātmānaṁ rahasi sthitaḥ
ekākī yata-chittātmā nirāśhīr aparigrahaḥ
Let one who practises sit constantly alone, in a secluded place, mind and self restrained, without expectation, owning nothing.
Explanation
And then, abruptly, the instructions begin.
Sit constantly alone, in a secluded place, restrained, without expectation, owning nothing.
After nine verses of disposition the chapter turns practical and stays that way for eight. What it asks for first is not effort but conditions — solitude, and nothing to look after.
