व्यामिश्रेणेव वाक्येन बुद्धिं मोहयसीव मे
तदेकं वद निश्िचत्य येन श्रेयोऽहमाप्नुयाम्
vyāmiśhreṇeva vākyena buddhiṁ mohayasīva me
tad ekaṁ vada niśhchitya yena śhreyo ’ham āpnuyām
Your words seem to point two ways, and they confuse me. Tell me plainly which one thing will lead me to the good.

vyāmiśreṇeva vākyena — your words seem mixed, and they confuse me.
He asks for one answer. The chapter will spend forty-three verses declining to reduce it to one, and the reason is in 3.5: the choice he thinks he is being offered does not exist.
