18.39 Deluding from beginning to end Krishna speaks

यदग्रे चानुबन्धे च सुखं मोहनमात्मनः
निद्रालस्यप्रमादोत्थं तत्तामसमुदाहृतम्

yad agre chānubandhe cha sukhaṁ mohanam ātmanaḥ
nidrālasya-pramādotthaṁ tat tāmasam udāhṛitam

And that happiness which deludes the self from beginning to end, arising from sleep, idleness and heedlessness, is said to be of inertia.

Explanation

Deluding from beginning to end.

Arising from sleep, idleness and heedlessness — no sweetness at either end.

The third kind is the only one with no case to be made for it. Both other grades are genuinely pleasant somewhere; this one is graded lowest because it is never good, not because it is wicked.
