17.16 Austerity of the mind Krishna speaks

मनःप्रसादः सौम्यत्वं मौनमात्मविनिग्रहः
भावसंशुद्धिरित्येतत्तपो मानसमुच्यते

manaḥ-prasādaḥ saumyatvaṁ maunam ātma-vinigrahaḥ
bhāva-sanśhuddhir ity etat tapo mānasam uchyate

Serenity of mind, gentleness, silence, self-restraint and purity of intent — this is called austerity of the mind.

Explanation

Austerity of the mind, and silence is on the list.

Serenity, gentleness, mauna, self-restraint, purity of intent.

Three verses have now described austerity without asking for a single hardship. Whatever the word means here, it is nearer to discipline of manner than to suffering, and the next verse makes that the standard.
