10.30 Among reckoners, Time Krishna speaks
प्रह्लादश्चास्मि दैत्यानां कालः कलयतामहम्
मृगाणां च मृगेन्द्रोऽहं वैनतेयश्च पक्षिणाम्
prahlādaśh chāsmi daityānāṁ kālaḥ kalayatām aham
mṛigāṇāṁ cha mṛigendro ’haṁ vainateyaśh cha pakṣhiṇām
Among the demons I am Prahlada; among reckoners, Time; among animals, the lion; and among birds, Garuda.
Explanation
Among reckoners, Time.
Prahlada among demons, the lion among animals, Garuda among birds — and kālaḥ among those who count.
Prahlada is the demon who was a devotee, and his presence makes the list's principle explicit: the category does not determine the case. Being the best demon qualifies.
