1.27 Overcome with compassion Sanjaya speaks
श्वशुरान्सुहृदश्चैव सेनयोरुभयोरपि
तान्समीक्ष्य स कौन्तेयः सर्वान्बन्धूनवस्थितान्
tān samīkṣhya sa kaunteyaḥ sarvān bandhūn avasthitān
kṛipayā parayāviṣhṭo viṣhīdann idam abravīt
Seeing all these kinsmen standing there, the son of Kunti was overcome with deep compassion, and in sorrow he said this.
Explanation
Overcome with compassion.
kṛpayā parayāviṣṭaḥ — filled with the highest pity. And in sorrow he speaks.
The word the text chooses for his state is compassion, not fear. Whatever else the Gita will say about this moment, it never once calls it cowardice.
