1.12 The grandsire blows his conch Sanjaya speaks
तस्य संजनयन्हर्षं कुरुवृद्धः पितामहः
सिंहनादं विनद्योच्चैः शङ्खं दध्मौ प्रतापवान्
tasya sañjanayan harṣhaṁ kuru-vṛiddhaḥ pitāmahaḥ
siṁha-nādaṁ vinadyochchaiḥ śhaṅkhaṁ dadhmau pratāpavān
To hearten him, the grand old man of the Kurus, the glorious grandsire, roared like a lion and blew his conch.
Explanation
Bhishma answers, and not with words.
To hearten him — harṣayan — the grand old man roars like a lion and blows his conch.
He has heard the anxiety in the speech and responds to the feeling rather than the content. It is the kindest act in the chapter, and it starts the noise that fills the next seven verses.
